Want to modernize your home's interior? Look up!
If you have that dreaded acoustic texture deridingly called "popcorn ceiling" or "cottage cheese" in your home, you can start there.
The ugly, bumpy surface will thwart even the best attempts to reinvent that raised ranch as a sleek, model-home-quality abode. To call these types of ceilings out of style is an understatement.
Even the pros recommend it.
"People just hate them," said Janet Keller, an accredited buyer’s representative with Windermere Real Estate in Bellevue, Wash. "It’s just like an old kitchen or bath. It gives the house a dated appearance."
These ceilings also can affect a home's value. "Something like that goes into the final cost negotiation of a house and the buyer is going to negotiate down," Keller added. She points out that acoustic ceilings are also dust traps and hard to maintain, because any attempt at cleaning can rub off the some of the acoustic material, damaging the ceiling.
If you are trying to sell your home, removing the popcorn ceiling texture will likely help you sell the property more quickly - and in today's market no seller can afford to have a buyer walk away for something like ceiling texture.
By removing the popcorn ceiling, you will be removing an obstacle toward the sale of your home - but only if it is done properly and done completely.
